A Wonderful Read From An Award- Winning Author
Second Chances by award winning author, Larry Yoke, was a great read! It is sure to keep you intrigued, and on the edge of your seat.
The reader follows the life of small town county boy, Hunter. At a young age, he learns to deal with a cruel family and losing his one and only friend. When his family moves closer to the city, Hunter does his best to fit in. The only way he knows how, is to befriend the kids that no one messes with. Amid of befriending his classmates from "the wrong side of the tracks", it starts him down the illicit path of drugs and violence. As he grows older, and has lost everything but his own life Hunter is offered a second chance. In the battle between his mind and heart,he must choose which course of action he will take.
This was the first novel I read by Larry Yoke, and it will not be my last. I enjoyed being along for Hunter's "life" journey. And I would love a sequel to this story. Although I know which road he takes at the end of this novel (no, I am not telling :-)) I want to see what path Hunter continues to take in life. Will he lead a life of the straight and narrow? Will he stay drunk/high until he is 85? So many questions!
You will instantly root for Hunter to make the right choices. Sadly, he doesn't always come through for us readers. Not everything is rainbows and unicorns, and I favored that the author didn't make things seem that way. All the characters were relatable, even Hunter's awful father. I won’t go into details about him, but JEEZ!
The author does a wonderful job at description and dialogue, that you are eagerly awaiting the next sentence. Not every chapter ends with gunshots and mayhem. But I was okay with that. Those were the times while reading that I would think to myself, "Thank goodness. This poor guy needs a break."
I would give the novel 5 out of 5 stars. You want to read this. It has just enough love, violence, and family drama, that any fiction reader would enjoy. Hunter goes through REAL life changes, and it is a journey you don't want to miss.
